is this more filling in the mouth then Peat Monster? I enjored those oak shavings but it just did not fill out much. I am thinking this or maybe that JD single barrel. Both are meant to have vanilla cereal notes and meant to be very fresh.

Hi Whisky Critic - for £35 this is indeed a whisky worth looking at, and it delivers something different to the normal peaty pantheon.

@WhiskyBoys - I enjoyed what Jim had to say about the Peat's Beast, too, and would agree about the punchy palate, and that it would suit a pre-dinner tipple. An Ardbeg 10yo I had subsequently won the phenolic arm wrestle, though. Thanks for visiting and leaving your comments, it is much appreciated.

Your title made me laugh. I think fear of peat is a bit more common among whisky drinkers than many would like to admit. That being said, despite the misleading name, it sounds like a decent dram.

I'm amazed we have still to see you here, to be honest Chris. You are more than welcome anytime - there is a sofa or two going spare, after all.
This Thursday (possibly too short notice for your busy self) we have Mr Craig Johnstone returning, this time with Bruichladdich and not the SMWS. On the 22nd we have our very own committee tasting; April 12th is John Glaser and whatever he has dreamt up for Compass Box since we last saw him, and then on the 26th this guy called Lucas will be turning up with anCnoc. You know him, right?
Seriously, though, send me a text and we'd be delighted to put you up.

Your post excellently conveys the mix of heady excitement and resigned impoverishment that whisky shops - especially those as well-stocked as the above example - always manage to elicit. It feels good getting home with the purchase, though!

Hi Whisky Critic,

In my experience with Diageo, 'more expensive' tends to mean 'more expensive'. You get more whiskies to sample, but the distillery experience remains the same and I for one resent this. You can find more Diageo single malts anywhere, but Blair Athol is a unique construction and you ought to be rewarded for venturing to it with a more in-depth look around. Perhaps it is the scale of the company, but going around a Diageo distillery is like touring an English Heritage property: don't go beyond the red ropes, please.

Chivas Brothers and Morrison Bowmore are two groups who add serious value to their tours, and can justify £25 prices.
Thanks for your comment.

Too bad to hear that you didn't have a great experience at this distillery - I wonder if the more expensive tours would have been better, or just more expensive?
